The growth and success of my future ministries will be the result of the great contribution of this program. (Philippines, '05 Grad)

I did not just learn about the knowledge but the life examples of the professors and everyone in ABTS. Your examples challenged us to go to the mission field by faith. (Hong Kong Student)

I learned very much from the examples and experiences of the lecturers -- and it clarified my theological thinking and my commitment to Christ's mission. (Indonesian Graduate '05)

God at work in Myanmar

In 1983, Don Craft, then missionary with New Tribes and now with ABWE, told Dr. Lillis of a growing Baptist church movement in Myanmar (then called Burma). This movement grew under the leadership of a man named Rev. Go Za Kham. An initial survey visit was made in 1983 to meet with Rev. Go Za Kham and develop a relationship with the group. In 1984 Dr. Lillis took veteran BMM missionary to India, James Garlow, into the country to gain his insight and evaluation of the potential. This growing relationship between Dr. Lillis and Rev. Go Za Kham eventually resulted in residence seminars being held in Yangon (then Rangoon ) in 1988. But the student uprisings at the universities in Myanmar resulted in the closure of this site for the next several years. In 1994 classes resumed and have continued to this day.

The seminars are very popular with several groups of church leaders who had left organizations they felt were holding liberal theological positions. While travel is difficult in this country, many students have traveled great distances with great expenditure of time, energy and funds to attend the seminars.

Even though the program in Myanmar has a relatively short history, there are already 37 graduates there. There are currently 50 active students.

Brother Go Za Kham was the original coordinator in Myanmar but early on he recommended Rev. Gin Khen Mang (Khenpi) who took the ABTS Myanmar Country Coordinator duties. Rev. Khenpi is the pastor of a Chin church in Yangon . He has also been one of the leaders of the Evangelical Baptist Church association for a number of years. This group is based mainly among the Chin people. He has been responsible to set up the ABTS classes in Yangon and to recruit students for the program.

Next the Asia Baptist Seminary opens seminary classes in Hong Kong.
